Description
A tiny, bronze-cast figure wearing a signature bowler hat, with the iconic movie makeup/eyelashes on one eye, and a long, pointed nose. He is sitting on the edge of a stone ledge, dangling his legs casually as if waiting for a bus.
Story
Mihály Kolodko decided to strip Alex—the milk-drinking, ultra-violent protagonist of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange—of his terrifying aura and lock him inside a miniature bronze body. Since the character was obsessed with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, the guerrilla artist couldn’t have found a better home for him than the Beethoven Monument in Vienna. Alex sits there now, listening to the master’s melodies for eternity—while looking like a Pinocchio whose nose grew a bit too much from telling too many lies.
Fun facts
- • Although Alex starts his evenings in a milk bar in the movie, unfortunately, there is no free milk promotion at the Vienna statue.
- • The statue's nose would serve as a perfect handle for ants if they wanted to climb it.
- • This is one of the most ironic statues in the city: a fictional British criminal on a German composer's monument, right in the middle of Austria.
