Description

The central element of the composition is a finely crafted, miniature bronze submarine, instantly recognizable by its signature rounded shape and periscopes. Standing on the conning tower of the vessel is Queen Elizabeth II herself. Her figure radiates her trademark, iconic elegance: she appears in her characteristic small hat, an elegant outfit, and holding her indispensable handbag. She gently raises one hand, as if practicing her protocol-mandated royal wave to the park's visitors, while the entire scene exudes the artist's signature warm irony.

Story

The artist, Mihály Kolodko, who is of Transcarpathian origin, placed this artwork in October 2024. The sculptor is known for frequently reflecting on historical figures, cultural icons, or childhood memories through his works. In the case of "Empire", a playful game of geopolitical and cultural associations takes center stage: the former head of the British Empire is positioned atop the "Yellow Submarine," immortalized by the Beatles. Choosing the revitalized, modern, and green environment of Millenáris Park was a deliberate decision, allowing plenty of room for dry, British-style humor.

Fun facts

  • • Double Meaning: The title of the statue (Empire) simultaneously references the monumental history of the British Empire and the absurd, minimalist way the Queen is traveling on a tiny vehicle.
  • • Musical Parallel: The shape of the yellow submarine is a direct nod to the Beatles and their 1968 animated film of the same name.
  • • Water Reflections: Kolodko frequently uses water as a natural setting for his statues; the park's small pond and the statue's placement enhance the submarine theme, making it look as if the vessel is just emerging from the depths.
